600 BC - 121 BC
Lehi through King Benjamin
| 600 BC (LLJ 0) |
Nephi=19 |
Laban |
Lehi Leaves Jerusalem. Nephi was "exceedingly young" at this time but "large in stature" this make me think 16 or 17 but I think the whole thing fits better if we add 2 years.
3 Nephi 2:5-7
an hundred years had passed away since the days of Mosiah, who was king over the people of the Nephites. And six hundred and nine years had passed away since Lehi left Jerusalem. And nine years had passed away from the time when the sign was given,...
| 598 BC (LLJ 2) |
Nephi=21 |
Lehi |
Jacob is born.
1 Nephi 18:7
And now, my father had begat two sons in the wilderness; the elder was called Jacob and the younger Joseph.
| 596 BC (LLJ 4) Nephi=23, Jacob=2 |
Lehi |
Joseph is born.
| 592 BC (LLJ 8) Nephi=27, Jacob=6, Joseph=4 |
Lehi |
Lehi's company arrive at the sea shore and begin construction on a ship.
| 574 BC (LLJ 26) Nephi=45, Jacob=24, Joseph=22 |
Nephi |
Lehi dies and is buried. Laman and Lemuel immediately begin revile against Nephi's leadership. It is likely that they separated into Nephites and Lamanite that same year.
2 Nephi 4:13
And it came to pass that not many days after his death, Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael where angry with me ...
| 570 BC (LLJ 30) Nephi=49, Jacob=28, Joseph=26 |
Nephi |
The Nephites and Lamanites have separated themselves. Nephi has established the church with Jacob and Joseph as priests.
2 Nephi 5:26, 28
... I, Nephi, did consecrate Jacob and Joseph, that they should be priests and teachers over the land of my people ... And thirty years had passed away from the time we left Jerusalem.
| 544 BC (LLJ 56) Nephi=75, Jacob=54, Joseph=52 |
Jacob |
Nephi chooses a king and gives him charge of the large plates of Nephi. He passes the small plates on to Jacob with strict commandments for their care.
Jacob 1:1
... fifty and five years had passed away from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem; wherefore, Nephi gave me, Jacob, a commandment concerning the small plates ...
Jacob 1:9
| 541 BC (LLJ 59) Nephi=78, Jacob=57, Joseph=55 |
Jacob |
Nephi dies and is buried.
Jacob 1:12
| 510 BC (LLJ 90) Jacob=88, Enos=0 |
Jacob |
Enos is born to Jacob in his old age. For Enos to "be old" in the year 420 BC, while Jacob was born around the year 598 BC, and for Enos to remember his Father teaching him, they both had to have lived long lives. For this estimate I'll assume that they both lived to nearly 100 years of age and that Enos was 10 years old when Jacob died.
Enos 1:1,3d
... I, Enos, knowing my father that he was a just man-for he taught me in his language, and also in the nurture and admonition of the Lord ... and the words which I had often heard my father speak ...
| 500 BC (LLJ 100) Enos=10 |
Enos |
Jacob dies and is buried. He passes the record to Enos.
| 420 BC (LLJ 180) Enos=90 |
Jarom |
Enos is old. He passes the record onto his son Jarom before he dies.
Enos 1:25-26
... I began to be old, and an hundred and seventy and nine years had passed away ... And I saw that I must soon go down to my grave ...
| 416 BC (LLJ 184) Enos=94 |
Jarom |
Enos dies.
| 399 BC (LLJ 201) |
Jarom |
The Nephites are well established in the land. They keep the law of Moses. They have had many battles with the Lamanites who are more numerous than the Nephites.
Jarom 1:5
... two hundred years had passed away ...
| 361 BC (LLJ 239) |
Omni |
Omni receives the plates from his father, Jarom. Jarom had them in his possession for 59 years. Omni mentions that the Kings are still keeping records in the large plates of Nephi.
Jarom 1:13
... two hundred and thirty and eight years had passed away ...
| 317 BC (LLJ 283) |
Amaron |
Amaron receives the plates from his father, Omni. Omni had the plates for 44 years.
Omni 1:3
... two hundred and eighty and two years had passed away ...
| 279 BC (LLJ 321) |
Amaron |
A large part of the population of Nephites is destroyed by the Lamanites. The more righteous are spared.
Omni 1:5
... three hundred and twenty years had passed away ...
| 266 BC (LLJ 334) |
Chemish |
Chemish gets the plates from his brother, Amaron. The average time the plates have been held is 51 years. If we assume that for the next 3 generations of men who possessed the plates, held them for around 51 years each, the timeline works out quite well.
| 241 BC (LLJ 359) |
Abinadom |
Abinadom receives the plates from his father, Chemish. Since Chemish was Amaron's brother instead of his son I have given him half the usual time for possessing the plates; just 25 years.
| 232 BC (LLJ 368) |
Abinadom |
Mosiah, the King of the Nephites, flees from the Land of Nephi with the most righteous portion of the Nephite population. They find the city of Zarahemla, the Nephites and the Mulekites join together with Mosiah as their king. This date is just a wild guess. I like it because it gives over 30 years before Zeniff tries to go back and I am guessing that King Mosiah would be about 40 years old at this time.
| 214 BC (LLJ 386) |
Benjamin=0 |
Mosiah Abinadom |
Benjamin is born to King Mosiah. This is just an estimate based solely on King Benjamin being really old when he died in 121 BC.
| 200 BC (LLJ 400) |
Benjamin=14 |
Mosiah Abinadom |
Zeniff and his colony depart to the land of Lehi-Nephi to reclaim their inheritance.
| 192 BC (LLJ 408) |
Benjamin=22, Zeniff departed=8 |
Mosiah Zeniff Amaleki |
Amaleki receives the plates from his father, Abinadom. If Abinadom had them for 49 years then this date fits.
| 187 BC (LLJ 413) |
Benjamin=27, Zeniff departed=13 |
Mosiah Zeniff Amaleki |
The Lamanites attack the people of Zeniff but are driven back. His colony has been in the land of Lehi-Nephi for 13 years.
Mosiah 9:14
... in the thirteenth year of my reign ... the Lamanites came upon [us]
| 181 BC (LLJ 419) |
Benjamin=33, Zeniff departed=19 |
Benjamin Zeniff Amaleki |
King Mosiah (the father of King Benjamin) dies. King Benjamin reigns in his stead.
| 178 BC (LLJ 422) |
Benjamin=36, Zeniff departed=22 |
Benjamin Zeniff Amaleki |
The Lamanites attack the people of Zeniff again. Again they are driven back.
| 173 BC (LLJ 427) |
Benjamin=41, Alma=0, Zeniff departed=27 |
Benjamin Zeniff Amaleki |
Alma is born in the Land of Lehi-Nephi, under the rule of King Zeniff. Alma and Mosiah both die in the year 91 BC and their ages are given.
Mosiah 29:44-46
... and Alma [the younger] was the first and chief judge. And now it came to pass that his father died, being eighty and two years old ... And it came to pass that Mosiah died also, in the thirty and third year of his reign, being sixty and three years old; making in the whole, five hundred and nine years from the time Lehi left Jerusalem.
| 160 BC (LLJ 440) |
Benjamin=54, Alma=13, Zeniff departed=40 |
Benjamin Noah Amaleki |
King Zeniff confers his kingdom upon his son Noah.
| 154 BC (LLJ 446) |
Benjamin=60, Mosiah=0, Alma=19, Zeniff departed=46 |
Benjamin Noah Amaleki |
Mosiah is born to King Benjamin. These estimated ages fit in well with the apparent Nephite tradition of having children (or perhaps,having more children) late in life.
Mosiah 6:4
And Mosiah began to reign ... in the thirtieth year of his age, making in the whole, about four hundred and seventy-six years from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem.
| 148 BC (LLJ 452) |
Benjamin=66, Mosiah=6, Alma=25, Zeniff departed=52 |
Benjamin Noah Amaleki |
Abinadi preaches to the people of Zeniff and in King Noah's court. Alma believes him and is driven out of the king's court. Abinadi is put to death by fire. Alma begins preaching in secret.
| 147 BC (LLJ 453) |
Benjamin=67, Mosiah=7, Alma=26, Zeniff departed=53 |
Benjamin Noah Amaleki |
Alma organizes the Church of God at the Waters of Mormon.
| 145 BC (LLJ 455) |
Benjamin=69, Mosiah=9, Alma=28, Zeniff departed=55 |
Benjamin Noah Amaleki |
King Noah believes that Alma is stirring up the people against him. He sends his amy to destroy them. Alma and his people escape into the wilderness. There are about 450 of them.
Gideon rebels against King Noah but spares his life as the Lamanites are attacking. The Nephites are overcome, King Noah is killed by fire, and the Lamanite bring the Nephites into bondage. Limhi succeeds his father as King.
| 137 BC (LLJ 463) |
Benjamin=77, Mosiah=17, Alma=36, Alma II=2, Zeniff departed=63 |
Benjamin Limhi Amaleki |
Alma the Younger is born. Alma has been living in the Land of Helam for 8 years now. Alma the Younger's age is unknown. My guess is that he was a teenager during the time when his community was brought into bondage by Lamanites and then miraculously liberated. That would account for him not remembering very well how God was involved. The also makes the angel's admonition to "remember the captivity of your fathers" more poignant.
| 135 BC (LLJ 465) |
Benjamin=79, Mosiah=19, Alma=38, Alma II=2, Zeniff departed=65 |
Limhi  Benjamin |
Amaleki passes the small plates of Nephi to King Benjamin. Amaleki was born in the days of Mosiah and lived to see him die so he is older than Benjamin.
| 124 BC (LLJ 476) |
Benjamin 90, Mosiah=30, Alma=49, Alma II=13, Zeniff departed=76 |
Limhi  Benjamin |
King Benjamin teaches his people from the tower. Every Nephite is converted to the Doctrine of Jesus Christ. He consecrates his son, Mosiah, to be King.
Mosiah 6:4
And Mosiah began to reign ... in the thirtieth year of his age, making in the whole, about four hundred and seventy-six years from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem.
121 BC (LLJ 479) |
Benjamin 93, Mosiah=33, Alma=52, Alma II=16, Zeniff departed=79 |
 Mosiah |
King Benjamin dies.
Mosiah 6:5
And king Benjamin lived three years and he died.
