JAREDWOOD.COM > Snivilous Chat home

Tue 8/30/2005
Last night I was working late and my brother, Matt, came on line. We started talking about the latest Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince theories. Since the chat contains so many of my arguments for why Severous Snape is and evil character in the books, I've decided to just post the chat. I will be going through it to change the order of a few of the entries and fixed some of the spelling to help the flow of the ideas, but the content of the conversation is unmodified.

Update: Comments have started coming in. You can read them at the bottom of the page.

Jared & Matt's Chat on Snivilous

Jared says:

Matt

Jared says:

Did you ever read that page?

Matt says:

ya I read it, sorry been doing a bunch of other stuff.  Makes sense now

Matt says:

I've very suspicious about Dumbledore's death

Jared says:

what do you mean?

Jared says:

Everyone keeps forgetting that Dumbledore didn't die ...

Jared says:

he was murdered

Matt says:

I just feel that it was planned.  Snape goes to him and says that I made the unbreakable vow then Dumbledore tells him that throughout the year he will train Harry in Voldy's past.  Then when the time was right to kill him.  I think it was planned all along between Dumbledore and Snape.  Why else would he do it?

Jared says:

That is simple

Jared says:

because Snivilous is evil

Matt says:

it was the only way to keep Voldy unsuspicious about Snape

Jared says:

Snivilous did it on Voldy's orders

Matt says:

now Snape rejoins Voldy and is still an insider for good.

Jared says:

Snivilous always was an insider

Matt says:

but for good

Jared says:

he was revealed in this one

Jared says:

revealed to be a true death eater

Jared says:

EVIL

Jared says:

It is so simple.   Snivilous murdered Dumbledore

Jared says:

evil Snivilous used an evil curse to do an evil murder

Matt says:

then what do all the people that have theories say, WHY DID Dumbledore TRUST SNAPE?

Jared says:

Dumbledore's biggest mistake

Jared says:

Dumbledore said himself that he makes mistakes ...

Jared says:

and his mistakes are correspondingly huger

Jared says:

This is his huger mistake

Jared says:

trusting Snivilous

Matt says:

ya but Snape didn't do anything to Harry afterward just ran away.  I know Voldy wanted him but he still didn't do any curses on him until the very last second so he could get away.  I just feel that he didn't want to hurt Harry because it's all part of his big plan to help bring down Voldy

Jared says:

There is lots of evidence to support your theory

Jared says:

You could be right

Jared says:

but I don't believe it

Jared says:

There is lots of evidence to support my theory too

Matt says:

Plus order of the Phoenix book

Matt says:

at the end

Matt says:

Snape didn't have to tell anyone what Harry and the other kids were doing

Matt says:

but he did and the Order went to help

Jared says:

He was just covering his own butt

Jared says:

I don't think that Snivilous is loyal to Voldy

Jared says:

and I don't think that he was loyal to Dumbledore either

Jared says:

He is his own evil entity. watching out for himself

Matt says:

I believe the ONLY reason he killed Dumbledore was because of the vow.  If not for that he wouldn't have done it.  Only because Draco chickened out

Jared says:

that is true

Jared says:

He keeps all doors open and stands in the middle for his best personal outcome and comfort

Matt says:

He didn't want to die so he killed Dumbledore

Jared says:

I agree

Jared says:

the GOOD GUY die for good

Jared says:

they don't KILL for good

Jared says:

Snivilous is not one of the GOOD GUYS

Matt says:

the other thing I thought was stupid was ...

Matt says:

Snape all of the sudden is some super Wizard and able to block all curses, when he never did before.

Jared says:

What do you mean when he never did before?

Matt says:

why doesn't everyone block everything

Matt says:

if it's sooo easy

Jared says:

when have you seen him fight?

Jared says:

Snape is the 2nd or 3rd most accomplished legilimens in the world

Jared says:

THAT is what gave him his power that night

Jared says:

other wizards can't do legilimency

Jared says:

Snape knew what Potter was doing before he did it

Jared says:

He said, " No Potter.  Not until you learn to shut your mouth and close your mind"

Matt says:

he didn't block Harry in the classroom when Harry sent him flying

Jared says:

Harry didn't send him flying

Jared says:

that was his own spell

Matt says:

there have been other times too that Snape didn't block stuff

Jared says:

like when?

Jared says:

The dueling club in book 2?

Jared says:

Snivilous pummeled Lockhart

Matt says:

Well I can't be specific right now, some day

Jared says:

Snivilous IS super powerful

Jared says:

and always has been

Matt says:

oh, book 3

Jared says:

"He knew more dark magic than most 7th years when he was 11 years old"

Jared says:

"He invented spells when he was at Hogwarts"

Matt says:

he was getting his butt kicked by Harry in the Shrieking Shack

Jared says:

Harry, Ron, and Hermione

Jared says:

Remember that the movie got it wrong

Matt says:

ya

Matt says:

didn't block that stuff

Jared says:

He was concentrating on Lupin and Black

Jared says:

and He was raging

Matt says:

it just seemed over the top to me

Jared says:

no not over the top

Jared says:

That is what a Legilimens can do

Jared says:

that is why Harry MUST discover and practice his Legilimency skills

Matt says:

why can't anyone block any spell if they see it coming then?

Jared says:

They can

Matt says:

nobody does

Jared says:

but we've only met 3 Legilimens

Jared says:

it is rare to be able to do Legilimency

Matt says:

Or he needs to learn occlumency

Jared says:

he needs both

Jared says:

Occlumency to block Snivilous and Voldy

Jared says:

and Legilimency to see what they are about to do

Jared says:

Like Snivilous can

Matt says:

so then if Voldy is the best Legilimens then how will Harry ever get a spell off

Jared says:

Voldy transferred his powers into Harry

Jared says:

Harry needs to develop it

Jared says:

It is there (Like parseltounge)

Jared says:

Harry just needs to get off his butt

Jared says:

I am telling you Matt.  None of the other wizards know how to do Legilimency

Jared says:

out of all the wizards we've met, only Dumbledore, Voldy and Snivilous (maybe Lupin)

Matt says:

Well this is how I read between the lines during Snape's run away ...

Matt says:

He was basically telling Harry to stop trying to hit him with spells and to let him get away or he would ruin the plan

Matt says:

why else would he be so upset by being called a coward

Jared says:

And I say that Dumbledore would never tell someone to commit murder

Jared says:

remember in book 3

Jared says:

the reason that Pettigrew was spared

Jared says:

Harry said, "I don't reckon my dad would want you to become killers"

Jared says:

It is an insult to Dumbledore's character to say that he wanted Snape to become a killer

Matt says:

It was a sacrifice on Dumbledore's part to get closer to bringing down Voldy

Jared says:

Dumbledore would die for a plan   -Yes-  but he would not kill for it

Jared says:

or ask someone else to kill for it

Jared says:

He would DIE but not KILL    That is what I say

Matt says:

so, you didn't answer when I said why else would snape get so mad by being called a coward

Jared says:

Snivilous is prideful

Jared says:

He hates being called a coward

Jared says:

He hated it when Bellatrix called him one

Jared says:

He loved it when he called Sirius one

Jared says:

He hated James

Jared says:

He hates Harry

Jared says:

He hated being called a coward by James' son

Jared says:

He had orders not to kill Harry

Jared says:

and he really wanted to

Jared says:

so he threw a tantrum instead

Matt says:

hum

Matt says:

fine, I just have my suspicions

Jared says:

Dumbledore didn't give Snivilous the dark arts job for so long.....why?

Jared says:

because he didn't want to tempt him

Jared says:

so then he says "Go ahead and use Avada Kedavra on me"?

Jared says:

NO WAY

Matt says:

So did Snape hate Dumbledore?

Jared says:

yes

Matt says:

the book said he got some kind of look on his face

Matt says:

hate look I think before the killing curse

Matt says:

I wonder why, Dumbledore was always so nice to him and trusted in him

Jared says:

because he is a twisted evil man

Jared says:

look,  even if Snivilous told Dumbledore about the vow ....

Jared says:

why did he make the vow in the first place?  What that on Dumbledore's orders?

Matt says:

well I always thought the whole time he was bluffing to the sisters about knowing the plan of the dark Lord.  I thought he was playing dumb to try and get it out of them?

Jared says:

That could be true

Matt says:

I mean when did he finally find out the plan.  He was concerned when he pull Draco aside because Draco wasn't confiding in him

Jared says:

concerned for his own life

Matt says:

I thought he still might not know even that far into the book

Jared says:

maybe not

Matt says:

why if he is soo evil then he could do it anytime

Jared says:

his evil plan is not to help the Dark Lord win

Jared says:

His evil plan is to keep himself alive and comfortable

Jared says:

and to learn as much dark arts magic as he can

Jared says:

He LOVES the dark arts

Jared says:

I am not saying that Snivilous is loyal to Voldy

Matt says:

then why isn't HE the dark lord?

Jared says:

Tom Riddle is more powerful than Snivilous

Jared says:

he can't be the dark lord while Voldy is around

Jared says:

He probably doesn't even want to be THE dark lord

Jared says:

too many enemies

Jared says:

that isn't Snivilous' style

Jared says:

Snivilous wants power, comfort, and revenge

Jared says:

He is getting it too

Jared says:

Almost all the marauders are dead now

Jared says:

James and Sirius are dead

Jared says:

Snivilous' fondest wish has come true

Jared says:

and by the way, that is the reason he sent Sirius to the battle

Jared says:

so he would get killed

Matt says:

well what about Lupin?  Does he want him dead?

Matt says:

and Wormtail?

Matt says:

the 4 of them hung out in school

Jared says:

He has made a servant out of Wormtail

Jared says:

He will probably personally kill Lupin next ...  or try to

Matt says:

I wonder if Snape used Occlumency when Voldy was using Legilimens on him to find out what he had really been doing for 15 years

Jared says:

Yes,  Snivilous uses Occlumency all the time

Jared says:

on every one

Jared says:

Including Dumbledore

Matt says:

Oh so the other person can't tell if you are doing Occlumency or Legilimency?

Jared says:

I don't know but it must be or Voldy would have known all this time

Matt says:

well Draco was able to keep Snape out of his thoughts

Jared says:

Draco is better at Occlumency than Harry is

Matt says:

So Bellatrix taught him, so she knows how too

Jared says:

Harry can't do it at all

Jared says:

His dad taught him

Matt says:

NO, Snape said, "So I see your Aunty Bellatrix has been teaching you this past summer"

Jared says:

anyone can do it if they practice.  but it is NEWT magic and most don't learn it

Jared says:

ok

Jared says:

maybe it is Bella

Jared says:

and Harry just won't practice

Jared says:

Harry has a mental block for it because of Snivilous

Matt says:

Bellatrix is a nasty woman.  I want to see her done in

Jared says:

Everyone want Neville to do it

Jared says:

Anyway.   there is plenty of argument for both sides of the Snivilous thing

Jared says:

But I say EVIL

Jared says:

I am going to start a website called www.burn-in-hell-snivilous.com

Matt says:

that's funny

Jared says:

I am laughing right now

Matt says:

well time for bed

Jared says:

I'll talk to you later

Jared says:

Think about Dumbledore wanting someone to murder

Jared says:

I am trying to convert people to my side

Matt says:

the only reason I would agree

Matt says:

is because Dumbledore said, in a pleading voice. "Severus" before he was killed

Jared says:

If I learn anything new I'll tell you

Jared says:

By the way, Roland agrees with you

Matt says:

Cool

Jared says:

I've already tried to convince him

Jared says:

We'll all see in two years

Jared says:

At least we know that R. A. B. is Regulus Black

Matt says:

I hope Harry gets back together with Jenny

Jared says:

I thought it was lame that he did a Peter Parker

Matt says:

ya

Matt says:

but I think they would use her as bait.  He did make a good point

Matt says:

oh, well

Jared says:

Yea,  that is what Spiderman said too

Jared says:

I guess he was right

Jared says:

I'll talk to you later

Matt says:

later

Here are some additional points and comments sent to me by some readers.

This is from my Mom, Colleen:
"I just had a light go on. JK Rowling was fore shadowing, Snivilous is very close to Villainous"

From Brett (a guy at work):
"JARED IS WRONG! Snivilous, as he is so beknighted here, is GOOD."

James makes this point:
"BRETT IS WRONG! Because of Snivilous, every person that protected and loved Harry is DEAD. (Sirius,Dumbledore and James & Lilly)"

Here is what Erin says:
"I don't think that even JK Rowling has thought this much into everything that you guys are debating.  Everything is going to end up happily ever after in the end.  It always does.  Snape is going to be good. Dumbledore is NOT 100% dead. Ginny and Harry are going to get together, this time permanently. Ron, Harry, and Hermione and going to be some great task force against the dark arts. Hermione is probably going to end up a teacher someday at Hogwarts. Mr. Weasley is going to be minister of magic. And what ever happened to the mirrorthe that Sirius gave Harry?  Just things to ponder."

Jammie has born her soul on the matter:
After reading Jared and Matt's conversation, I was very torn... Could Snape really be bad?  After pondering this question much of the night, I have decided to stick to my original decision that Snape is good. I agree that he hates Harry, and a part of him doesnt want Harry to succeed, but I dont think he will let his hate for Harry get in the way of the big picture - destroying the Dark Lord. Matt brings up alot of good points, all of which I agree with, and have argued to Jared myself. Jared also has some good arguments, about "good" not killing, and if Snape was "good" he never would have killed Dumbledore (this is where I waiver a little in my beliefs.) But for the bigger picture - Dumbledore had to die and I think he (Dumbledore) knew that. That is why Dumbledore taught Harry all he could about Voldy this year. A point that Matt did not bring up, is the conversation Hagrid overheard between Snape and Dumbledore, in Chapter 19...Snape said he didnt want to continue with the "plan" and Dumbledore said it was too late, he had to whether he liked it or not. I believe that "plan" was to kill Dumbledore so Voldy would really believe in him, so Snape could be on the "inside" to help Harry. I dont think book 7 is going to be all "rainbows and unicorns" the way Erin has said. I do think Harry will suffer more before accomplishing his goal. I want him to continue at Hogwarts, with his friends but I dont see how that can happen at this point in the story... who knows, he may even die with Voldy!? I hope not.  I agree that I could be totally off here, and Snape could really be evil. Who knows? It could go either way. JK Rowling is a genius. All I know is I can't wait for Book 7!!

More from James: (this one is the best 'Snape is good' argument I've heard)
If Snivilous is evil then why in the end of book four does Snivilous show Fudge the dark-mark on his arm?

Matt wrote back and said this:
Jammie is a genius for bringing up the conversation between Dumbledore and Snape, which Hagrid overheard. I knew there was more evidence to support my theory. I believe now more then ever that Dumbledore's death was planned.

James again:
Whatever. The conversation between Dumbledore and Snivilous could be about anything so that's not really proof to support any side of the argument. May be Snivilous was sick of spying on Draco for Dumbledore. Who knows?
